THE WRITERS NOTES.

Buying Time
"It was a cold dark night, not much light, clouds were shading out the moon"

As a kid growing up in the bush, some nights I would sneak out to meet some mates at the old railway station, which had been deserted for 40 years, all that was left was a clearing and a raised area that used to house the platform. Now this place was not only a gathering place for us kids, but also for some of the young men, to have a few beer's and talk a bit of bull. We would light a small bonfire, and then proceed to tell stories.

These were the first thoughts I had when I started to write this song.

In essence the song is about being in a hurry to grow up, and coming full circle, and seeing the same impatience in our own children.

Don't Take This Love Away
"I haven’t always done what’s best, it took some time to come around, but I’ve been given second chances and I won’t let you down"

I wrote this song with my dear friend Debra Byrne. Deb and I lived in the same street in Elwood for about a year, and it was during that time we worked together live, and also in a writing situation.

We all make mistakes in life; it's a part of being human, and also a part of our journey in learning the lessons of life. This song is about that learning, and given second chances to get it right.

Say You'll Be Mine
"Every morning noon and every night say you’ll be mine"

We've all been infatuated at least once in our lives, so this is the story of infatuation, pure and simple, nothing too complicated about this one, or deep and meaningful, except if you're going through it at the moment, then you'll know how completely consuming it is.

Leave Me the Rain
“Trying to hold onto you, was like holding onto sand, when you think you've got it babe, it slips beneath your hands...”

A song of lost love, when you feel you've given your all, and your all is not enough, there is nothing left to do, but take your heart ache and leave, some people are just not meant to be in a relationship with a particular person.

State of the Heart

“You work in town, I work by night, that gives us six until seven to work this out"

One of my all time favourite songs. An anthem for muso's trying to get a relationship together. Thanks Eric.

To Late to Tell
“It’s hard to keep dry eyes, while those tears swell up inside"

A friend of Dee's was in a one sided relationship, that ultimately fell apart. She was a country girl, so in tribute to her dilemma and demeanour, it had to have a real country flavour. ‘When the truth hurts'.

I Surrender
“I bought a ticket on a whisky train, and it was there that I would spend that day, but that night when you walked into the room”

I met Diana on Hamilton Island, and this is the story, it was most unexpected for both of us.

I’d given up completely on relationships, and was out for a good time not a long time, I was also not the ideal choice, for an only daughter of an Italian family, also the fact that we lived in different states, made it almost impossible to entertain. But when cupid does his thing, all mountains are conquerable.

Take me home
“I've been a sailor, sailing on an ocean of dreams”

This is kind of an over view of one's life, and home is that place of solitude and safety, a heaven on earth or beyond.

Pioneers
“When I was sixteen I said I was leaving, I had to follow my musical dreams”

This is about my family tree, four generations, I get a real perspective of being a part of the chain of life, just a link, a leaf in a tree, not the chain and not the tree, but part there of. This is something we all have in common.

Poor mans Al Jolson
“The old wooden barrel held plenty of cheer and the wick in the lantern was long”

My brother Terry is a fine bush poet, and has entertained us for years with his wit and rhyme, and inheritance from our father who also has left us with some entertaining tales.
This is one of Terry’s finest, a tribute to not only our dad (coogan) but to a time gone by, etched forever in our hearts, our minds, and our lives.

Family
“Now I’m one of the family”

When I met Diana’s family, I’d never met such a close family before, they are not only relations but best of friends, and I mean the extended family as well, thicker than thieves, there are 70 of us who sit down together for Christmas dinner, the food, the wine, the bullshit, it all flows like a river. ‘Tutto familia va bene’

Land of the Immigrant
“There was a time and moment when we were a sailors dream”

A friend of mine asked me to write something for Australia day some years ago, something that encompassed where we’d come from, where we are, and where we are going.
I performed this for the Australia day council a few years back.
A little patriotism.

I hope you enjoy reading the writers perspective, and that it enriches your experience with the songs.
